Our Garden Journal - Starting Seeds

At the beginning of March, the kids and I started some seeds for our vegetable garden. This is our first time to grow anything but a few potted plants, so... well, we'll just see how it goes. One day, during the first week of March we started the warm weather loving vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, onions, and some herbs) in the tray full of little seed starting disks. We put the cover on and put them on a sunny windowsill. These are seeds that should be started indoors about six to eight weeks before the last frost, so I wanted to make sure I got them started before anything else.

The following week, we started some seeds of some hardy plants that can handle cooler weather (lettuce, spinach, peas, radishes, beets, and an edible flower). We put these seeds outside in a little pop-up green house we have to keep them protected until the garden spot was all ready to go. I wanted to get them started, even though I hadn't finished getting the garden ready. Hub was gone for three weeks in March, so trying to get the spot all dug out was a slow process.

We had a lot of fun. I LOVE the smell of the potting soil, so we had a great time smelling the soil, filling the pots, putting three seeds in each one, sprinkling a little soil on top, and then spraying them with the squirt bottle. After finishing each type of seed, we labeled some clothes pins and clipped them onto the sides of the peat pots. The kids really got into it, especially my girl. She wanted to help with everything, and would have loved to keep going, even after we were finished. I think she's going to be a big help with the garden this year!
